With Atlanta as a rail center before a major air center, commuter rail should have been a part of the plan when MARTA was created. Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Boston all have extensive commuter rail to complement bus and subway. I live in Austin whose growth rate has been tremendous in the last 20 years. Having lived in Atlanta from 1957 to 1973, I often compare Austin to Atlanta, whose growth since we left has been tremendous. But both cities struggle with traffic issues and insufficient mass transit.
